Hybrid Arrays vs. All-Flash Arrays
From the user’s perspective, these mediums of storage can be brought to entire storage arrays to apply for their benefits in the improvement of performance over the HDD traditional array. The presence of SSDS or other flash storage forms in all-flash arrays that have highly predictable performance characteristics and larger volumes of storage while on the other hand, the hybrids provide storage solutions that are less predictable performance while they also go at a lower budget since they are also more moderate.
On one hand, the Hybrid storage solutions use HDD for storage purposes instead of SSHDs to give the advantages of hybridity in the storage capacity; they use a small quality of flash storage. The flash storage does provide a limited tier when it comes to offering higher performance that is predictable or as a whole, acts like an array’s cache for the application that uses it.
The hybrid storage solutions are cheaper per GB of storage capacity, making it the better choice for users who have high storage needs such as storing files or storage that need backup and recovery. At the same time, they provide a performance boost especially in environments with low transactions that would have a significant difference when a small layer of high-speed flash is applied. Moreover, compared to the HDD array, their storage density is not lower with a significant margin. On the other hand, when it comes to high transaction environments, the all-flash arrays provide higher performance due to the SSD v hybrid capacity. While using the all-flash storage, the performance is not affected. However, their cost as compared that that of hybrid array per GB of storage is relatively higher. With the limitation of data center space, they may not be a good option for storage for particular systems that are lower.
A point to note is that being in favor of one depends on the interests of the user based on the systems they are operating.
